EAT
UCHI
Our favorite date spot and the best sushi experience in town! We always sit at the wine bar and order the 10-course omakase. We promise, it’s worth it!
STEAK 48
Another one of our go to date spots! We recommend sitting at the bar - downstairs for people watching, upstairs for intimacy. Try the fried deviled eggs and Alaskan King Crab!
WHATABURGER
A Texas classic and Brandon’s favorite fast food! We recommend breakfast taquitos (served 11p-11a).
KATZ
Open 24-hours and a better alternative to IHOP with classic Jewish eats.

Backstory: When Brandon got back in town from his trip, he was excited to hangout again. This would be our second time meeting since we reunited and neither of us were sure it was a platonic situation or a rekindling of an old romance. We talked at Brasil (a cafe bar down the street) until they closed and asked us to leave. As we walked out and headed toward our cars, Brandon was obviously lingering and hesitantly asked - are you hungry or are you sick of me already? We ended up at Katz since it was open late and close by. After he ordered everything that I said sounded good and sharing it all, we got on the subject of us. I reluctantly told him that it was starting to feel like a date and like a line from a movie, he responded, I was hoping that it would be. Major butterflies! Our night ended with a hug and an agreement that our next time hanging out would be an official date, and it was.
FLOWER CHILD
An everyday lunch spot and very healthy option if you’re burnt out on the Houston classics - TexMex and BBQ.
SHIPLEY DO-NUTS
The best donuts.
KOLACHE FACTORY
Easy, cheap, yummy.
AMY'S ICE CREAMS
Super rich ice cream in fun flavors like Mocha Guinness or Whoopie Pie. This was Chacha’s first legit job when she was 16!
LOS TIOS
Although there are several awesome and cheap TexMex locations all over Houston, Los Tios is two blocks from our house so we end up here often.
MICO'S HOT CHICKEN
Background: When I initially reached out to Brandon about catching up, we texted back and forth about where we should meet. He wanted me to pick and I wanted him to - I was afraid of picking the wrong vibe! We hadn’t seen or talked to each other in 17 years so there was a lot of pressure. But I didn’t budge and he ended up picking Mico’s. It turned out to be the perfect vibe.
EMPIRE CAFE
A Montrose classic - nice patios and basic food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you ever need a slice of cake, they got you covered! I’ve been eating here since the 90s.
AGORA
Another Montrose classic - this is a coffee shop wine bar that has belly dancing on Wednesdays. It’s got a 90s vibe and is a good place for a late night cigar and cappuccino. We have spent many hours here as teens smoking on the patio with large groups of friends.
BRASIL
Yet another Montrose classic. This place has two great patios and decent food if you’re looking for a good middle ground - not too basic, not too fancy.
-
Fun fact, I lived on Hawthorne, the street behind it, in 2000.
THE ORIGINAL NINFA'S ON NAVIGATION
Very classic Houston TexMex and one of our favorites.
THE BREAKFAST CLUB
Line down the street popular - get fried chicken and waffles here.
BABY BARNABY'S ON FAIRVIEW
A Montrose breakfast classic. I grew up spending many mornings waiting for a table here. My favorite is the Green Eggs and Ham!
TINY BOXWOODS
Two locations, but I recommend the one on West Alabama. Pricey but worth it if you want to eat lunch in a quaint and elegant garden.
TINY'S MILK & COOKIES
A walk-up coffee shop bakery. Everything here is amazing. Ideal for a snack on sunny days.
THE PIT ROOM
This place also has a line down the street. If you want BBQ, here’s a place to try.
GOODE COMPANY
Another old school Houston classic for BBQ. My brother and I would pronounce as “goodie-co” as kids.
CHUY'S
This place has become a chain but still holds true to its original flavors from back in the day. This is TexMex but in an Austin-style way. It’s also Brandon’s dad’s favorite!

Fun fact: When I was a young teen and vegetarian, my best friend and I would go for lunch and order beans and rice with a “side” of tortillas, lettuce, sour cream and chips. We’d end up eating enough for two and had left overs all for only two bucks!
